What is Montego Bay Best Known For?
Known for its jaw-dropping scenery and laid-back island vibes, Jamaica offers pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, and ten sprawling golf courses spread throughout the island. Best of all, you’ll enjoy the island’s vibrant culture and incredible local foods (be sure to try the jerk chicken and ackee and saltfish!).
No matter what your travel goals are, there are PLENTY of exciting things to do in Montego Bay. Need help narrowing things down? Let’s take a closer look!
1. Beach
Like most Caribbean islands, Jamaica is famous for its beaches. If you’re staying in Montego Bay, your priority should be some fun in the sun at Doctor’s Cave Beach.
Generally regarded as the top beach destination in Montego Bay, Doctor’s Cave Beach offers snorkeling, on-site dining, and a variety of useful amenities. Be aware that you’ll pay a nominal admission fee for access. As of 2025, you’ll pay $8 per adult and $4 per child under 12.
Doctor’s Cave Beach is a popular hotspot – and naturally, it draws the crowds to match. If you’re in the mood for a quieter day, head over to Cornwall Beach. This peaceful respite is just a stone’s throw from Doctor’s Cave Beach – but it’s worlds away in terms of atmosphere and vibe. Here, the tourists are sparse and the mood is decidedly chill. Bring a book and settle in for a relaxing day in paradise!
2. The Hip-Strip (Gloucester Avenue)
Aside from its gorgeous beaches, Montego Bay is known and loved for its high-energy island vibes. Commonly known as the “Hip-Strip,” Gloucester Avenue boasts a plethora of hotels, restaurants, bars, and shopping locations.
On a stroll down the strip, you’ll sip rum punch, dance to lively reggae music, and enjoy the unique energy of Montego Bay, Jamaica. No matter where you’re traveling, it’s always wise to practice caution – while the Hip-Strip is generally safe to explore, be sure to stay aware of your surroundings!
3. Explore Downtown Montego Bay
Downtown Montego Bay – also known as Downtown “MoBay” – offers a more authentically Jamaican experience than the tourist-driven Hip-Strip. Here, you’ll find more restaurants, bars, and shopping. But more importantly, you’ll also learn a bit about the history of the island and its people.
In Downtown Montego Bay, you’ll explore Sam Sharpe Square. The historic square is named in honor of Sam Sharpe, who led the Baptist War slave rebellion from 1831-1832. The square is also home to the Sam Sharpe Monument, the old courthouse (now the Civic Center), and “the Cage,” which was built as a prison for runaway enslaved people back in 1806.
4. The Blue Hole
There are plenty of incredible things to do in Montego Bay, but if you have the time and flexibility, be sure to explore beyond the borders of the city. Jamaica offers some of the most beautiful rainforests in the Caribbean – including the jaw-dropping Blue Hole and Dunn’s River Falls.
A two-hour drive from Montego Bay, this one will require a guided tour – but we promise it’s all worth it when you step into Dunn’s River Falls & Park! Here, you’ll zipline, relax on the beach, and climb the island’s legendary falls!
5. Green Grotto Caves
If you’ve ever wanted to experience the real-life version of Ariel’s Grotto, you’ll get your chance at Jamaica’s Green Grotto Caves. Situated 45 minutes outside of Montego Bay, these otherworldly caves are straight out of a fairy tale.
If you’ve rented a car, you can drive yourself and pay the entrance fee on-site (we recommend avoiding days when cruise ships are in port!). Otherwise, book a guided excursion ahead of time for a stress-free transfer and cave experience.
6. Luminous Lagoon
If you’re looking for an alternative to Montego Bay’s bustling nightlife scene, there’s no experience more magical than the Luminous Lagoon. Located about 40 minutes from Montego Bay in Trelawney Parish, this ethereal lagoon is the perfect way to end a day in paradise.
At Luminous Lagoon, you’ll experience one of nature’s most astonishing natural phenomena – phosphorescent, luminous waters! At night, Luminous Lagoon comes alive with millions of dinoflagellates, producing a magical and otherworldly glow.
The waters are safe to swim, but you’ll want to book a guided tour to keep things as easy and stress-free as possible.
7. Rick’s Cafe Day Trip
Known for cliff diving and incredible sunsets, Rick’s Cafe Jamaica is one of the most iconic bars in the world.
Admittedly, Rick’s Cafe is a bit of a hike from Montego Bay (about an hour and 45 minutes by car), but no list of things to do in Jamaica would be complete without this one-of-a-kind experience.
While it’s possible to take a taxi from Montego Bay, we recommend booking a guided tour that combines your visit to Rick’s with other Jamaican adventures like ATVing and bamboo rafting.
You’ll spend the day exploring the island, then join the party at Rick’s. Here, you’ll enjoy Caribbean cuisine and plenty of rum punch while you watch (or join!) the cliffdivers – and dance the night away!
How Do I Spend a Day in Montego Bay, Jamaica?
If you have one day to spend in Montego Bay, chances are you’re visiting via cruise ship. This means you’ll need to optimize your limited time. Like much of the Caribbean, Jamaica is known for its beautiful beaches, so a visit to the beach is always a great choice! If you’re looking for a lively atmosphere to go with your beach day, Doctor’s Cave Beach is your top pick. Looking for a quiet retreat? Nearby Cornwall Beach offers the peace and tranquility you’re after!
