Why Maui?

Hawaii is made up of several different Islands, that all offer multiple “OMG!” experiences for an incredible honeymoon. So it can be overwhelming to figure out which island to visit. A lot of my couples want to visit as many as they can during their honeymoon, and while that is a great idea, I do think sticking to one will get you the most value for your time and budget.

Maui is my choice for honeymooners, because of its unique combination of privacy, luxury, and natural beauty. For couples seeking intimacy, Maui’s numerous private villas and boutique resorts, such as the secluded Travaasa Hana, offer exclusive, romantic settings away from the more tourist-heavy spots found on islands like Oahu. Moreover, Maui excels in activities that are best suited for honeymoon travel.

Many Luxurious & Pampering Resort Options

Maui also has exclusive resort options, making it ideal for honeymooners. You will have your pick of amazing resorts that will give you service, pampering, and romance!  We recommend the Four Seasons Hotel Maui at Wailea or the Art Deco elegance of the Fairmont Kea Lani Maui. Believe it or not, Disney’s Aulani Resort (a short trip to Maui) is also an amazing resort for your honeymoon because you get 5-star service combined with Disney magic.

The island also has some of the most romantic dining experiences in Hawaii. Restaurants such as Mama’s Fish House provide gourmet Pacific cuisine and panoramic views of the ocean, ideal for a memorable dinner at dusk. Once you’ve landed on your resort, you can then start planning your romantic activities!

1. Window Shopping & Volunteering

The primary entry point for most visitors to Maui is West Maui. This region has unique locations like Kapalua, Honolua Bay, Kaanapali, and the historically rich town of Lahaina. Unfortunately, after the devastating fires in August of 2023, the area is still trying to recover.

In Lahaina, honeymooners can integrate a sense of community and stewardship into their visit by engaging in local volunteer efforts focused on preserving the town’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. One significant opportunity is with the Lahaina Restoration Foundation, which works to maintain and restore the town’s historic sites. Couples can participate in preserving historic buildings or landscaping around ancient landmarks, activities that not only enhance the town but also allow them to connect deeply with its history.

Additionally, environmental initiatives like coral reef cleanups are organized by local conservation groups. These efforts help protect the marine ecosystems vital to Lahaina’s coastal charm. Volunteering in these ways provides couples with a fulfilling experience that strengthens their bond and leaves a lasting impact on the paradise they enjoyed during their honeymoon.

2. Whale Watching

The best time to spot whales in Maui is from December to May when humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of Hawaii. You can witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. The calm and clear waters off the coast of Lahaina provide an ideal vantage point for sightings. Couples can check out a variety of whale-watching tours, where experienced guides share insights about the whales’ behaviors and conservation. These excursions not only offer the thrill of seeing humpbacks breach and splash but also allow for stunning photo opportunities against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean and Maui’s scenic coastlines.

3. Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

Kapalua Beach provides a snorkeling experience in calmer and more protected waters, ensuring a safer environment for underwater exploration. Honolua Bay, located a few miles east, offers a rocky terrain for those seeking a different snorkeling adventure.

Kaanapali Beach features Black Rock, a popular spot where the ocean reaches depths of up to 25 feet, inviting diving and snorkeling enthusiasts to immerse themselves.

4. Hiking Trails To Haleakala Volcano

Three-fourths of Maui is made of the Haleakala volcano, which has its own national park. Its crater has several hiking trails, from 10-minute sprints (perfect for me) to more difficult treks for day trippers and campers. The Sliding Sands Trail is particularly popular because it descends into the multicolored cinder cones and vast, silent crater—an otherworldly scene that feels like stepping onto another planet.

For a less strenuous but equally rewarding hike, the Hosmer Grove Loop offers a easy walk through eucalyptus and native shrubbery, with the chance to spot rare birds and enjoy serene forest landscapes. Watching the sunrise from Haleakalā’s peak is a breathtaking experience not to be missed, as the early morning light floods the crater, revealing a stunning palette of colors and casting a magical spell over the panoramic views.

5. A Tour Of The West Maui Mountains

Honeymooners can enjoy a romantic trip through the majestic Mauna Kahalawai, also known as the West Maui Mountains. I recommend Iao Valley State Park, where the tropical lushness welcomes you at every turn. It’s here where you can see the Nakalele Blowhole, a natural wonder that it such a cool experience. Don’t forget to take a romantic stroll along the charming bridges in the Waihe’e Valley rainforest. You can bike-ride to make it more fun.

6. Don’t Miss a Luau

A Maui honeymoon isn’t complete without the traditional experience of a sunset luau. This is a foodie traveler’s dream. The feasts that are served are seriously the best spreads…ever. Plus you’ll be mesmerized by the graceful artistry of hula dancers. It’s one of those “when in Rome” moments. When in Hawaii, one must attend a Luau.

7. Romantic Things To Do in Maui At Night

Obviously, nighttime romantic adventures is a honeymoon must. We recommend a sunset/glow clear kayak tour! Just the two of you and the water. Or you can try a night-time snorkel tour at Turtle Town! But our absolute favorite is s’mores and star gazing on Hidden beach! All I can imagine is hearing the fire and the waves!

Maui offers an amazing experience for visitors throughout the year. For a perfect island getaway, plan your visit between April, May, and September through November, when the weather is pleasant, and the crowd is also less. If you’re a surfing enthusiast, December is the ultimate time to catch the waves.  In fact, these really are the best times to go to any of the Hawaiian Islands for your honeymoon.

To reach this historic site, located on the island of Oahu, visitors typically take a short inter-island flight from Maui to Honolulu, which is both convenient and offers picturesque views of the Hawaiian archipelago from above. Pearl Harbor, as a pivotal site in American history, provides a deeply moving experience through its museums, memorials, and exhibits. The USS Arizona Memorial, accessible only by boat, stands as a solemn tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives during the December 1941 attack. Couples can explore the visitor center’s exhibits, take guided tours, and even visit the Battleship Missouri, where the Japanese surrender was signed, marking the end of World War II.
