Sandos Playacar: One Affordable Option for a Beach Wedding in Playa del Carmen
If you’re thinking about Playa del Carmen, Sandos Playacar is a fantastic pick. I’ve personally planned a few weddings at Sandos and love how straightforward they make everything. It’s also a budget-friendly option, so you can keep costs in check without sacrificing the main things you want: a lovely ceremony, great food, and lasting memories.

Sandos Playacar is an all-inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, that combines beachfront relaxation with a range of activities and entertainment. Built in 1996 and featuring 819 rooms, the property received its last major update in 2012 (specifically, the Riviera Family rooms). If you’re looking for a resort that can keep the entire wedding party happy—without straining your budget—Sandos Playacar hits that sweet spot.
My Personal Take on Sandos Playacar
I’ve stayed at Sandos Playacar more than once, and each time it’s delivered in different ways. Here’s a quick look at what stood out:
- All-Inclusive Perks: Direct beach access, multiple pools (including an Adults-Only section), and various bars and restaurants keep everyone entertained.
- Vibrant Adults-Only Area: If you’re looking to keep parts of your wedding group more laid-back (or extra lively!), the AO section has its own pool, breakfast restaurant, and beach area—plus foam parties and pool games during the day.
- Room Comfort: My Superior Select AO room was only a short walk to the pool, beach, and key dining spots. The décor hasn’t been refreshed in a while, but it fits the bill for the budget. I also found that it was clean.
- On-Site Entertainment: From mini golf and tennis to nightly shows like a Shakira tribute, there’s always something for your guests to do between wedding events.
- Budget-Friendly: This is far from a top-tier foodie resort, but the buffet is extensive, and you’ll find decent options at most restaurants. For couples wanting to save some cash on a group trip, Sandos Playacar strikes a good balance.
Destination Wedding Potential
I’ve organized several weddings at Sandos properties—some at Caracol and Playacar—and can confidently say the staff is well-versed in handling all the details. The beach at Sandos Playacar is absolutely gorgeous, so you can expect some stunning photos if you choose to hold your ceremony there. Cost-wise, it’s a strong contender for couples aiming to keep expenses under control without sacrificing the essentials. The wedding department is easy to work with and quite flexible, which means less stress and more enjoyment for you and your guests.
Why Sandos Playacar Works for Your Destination Wedding
Gorgeous Beachfront Location
Playa del Carmen is known for its sparkling turquoise waters and powdery sand, and Sandos Playacar sits on one of the nicest stretches of beach in the Riviera Maya. Your wedding photos will look fantastic with the palm trees and ocean backdrop.
Flexible Wedding Packages
Sandos offers three main packages—Seaside Bliss, Sweet Romance, and Dreamcatcher—with different levels of décor, music, and reception options. All are available at Sandos Playacar, so you can pick the one that fits your style and budget best.
Sandos routinely runs promotions where you can earn up to USD 2,000 off your wedding package, based on how many rooms you and your guests book. If you’re worried about finances (or if you just like a great deal), this is a major plus.

Reception
The Dreamcatcher reception includes:
- A private dinner reception with an open bar (three hours)

Added Perks
Even though it’s more low-key, you still receive:

- A potential room upgrade (subject to availability)
- Honeymoon amenities to enhance your stay
- Up to USD 2,000 in discounts if enough rooms are booked
Smooth Wedding Coordination
I’ve found the Sandos wedding team super easy to work with. They handle the behind-the-scenes scheduling, décor, music, and more, so you can enjoy the celebration. You’ll also get an English-speaking coordinator who ensures every detail comes together just how you want it.
Sandos offers straightforward discounts when you book enough rooms:
- USD 1,000 Discount for 18 rooms x 5 nights (90–179 room nights total)
- USD 2,000 Discount for 36 rooms x 5 nights (180+ room nights total)
This discount is valid at all Sandos resorts in Mexico, including Sandos Playacar. If you have a sizable wedding party, it’s a quick way to save on your chosen package. But of course you get more perks working with a destination wedding specialist!
More Ways to Personalize Your Celebration
A La Carte Wedding Options
If you want to customize every detail—like specific flowers, a different menu, or unique entertainment—Sandos offers a la carte weddings. You can work with their team to build a celebration that fits your exact vision, from music choices to décor themes.
Green Wedding at Sandos Caracol
Although this special add-on is specific to Sandos Caracol Eco Resort, it might interest couples who want an eco-friendly twist. It includes live Mayan drum music, a tree-planting ceremony, and a Temazcal ritual. If you like the idea of a more natural vibe, it’s worth a look—but you’d need to hop over to Caracol instead of Playacar.
South Asian Weddings
Sandos is also a solid option for South Asian destination weddings, offering Sangeet/Garba nights, Mehndi parties, Indian menu options, and more. If you’re planning a multi-day cultural celebration with lots of festivities, the resort can handle it.
Inclusive Weddings for All
Sandos Resorts is part of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association, which means every couple gets a warm welcome. You can host a symbolic union or a legal ceremony, and the staff is there to ensure your celebration feels uniquely yours. It’s just one more reason Sandos stands out for couples seeking a safe, inclusive place to say “I do.”
Incredible Amenities and Exciting Extras
From swim-up bars to gourmet dining and lively nightly shows, Sandos gives you and your guests plenty to do. At Sandos Playacar specifically, you’ll find direct beach access, multiple pools, and entertainment from sunrise to sunset. You can also plan group outings—like water sports or spa days—to make the whole trip feel like one big celebration.
All-Inclusive Amenities
One of the biggest draws of Sandos Playacar is its expansive beachfront, which was free of sargassum when I visited in August—something that can’t always be said for other local beaches. For a more active day, guests can take advantage of the mini golf course, tennis courts, a well-equipped fitness center, and a world-class spa.
Families will appreciate the dedicated kids’ waterpark and the fun “Bamboo Island” area, while those seeking extra excitement can check out beach volleyball or some of the daily activities offered around the resort. Evenings are just as entertaining, with spectacular nightly shows.
Adults-Only Section
Although the resort accommodates families, it also caters to adults looking for a more laid-back vibe in its exclusive AO area, located closest to the beach. This section has a designated pool, a separate beach area, and a private à la carte breakfast restaurant that doesn’t require reservations, which feels like a plus for those who prefer a quieter morning routine. It even grants access to two premium bar lounges, adding a touch of luxury.
During my stay in a Superior Select AO room, I was just steps away from the adults-only pool, the Cupcake Café for a quick pick-me-up, and the beach itself. The AO pool was consistently lively, with morning aquafit sessions, pool games, and a foam party on Thursday afternoons. I appreciated the overall comfort of the room, even though it hasn’t seen a refresh in a while. It’s worth noting that if you book an AO room and aren’t part of the Royal Elite program, you won’t have access to any Royal Elite perks.
Accommodation Options
The resort offers various room categories, with most featuring either a king bed or two doubles. The Hacienda Junior Suite was a definite step up in aesthetics and included access to a shared pool and outdoor jacuzzi. However, as with the AO rooms, you won’t receive any Royal Elite amenities unless you’re actually part of Royal Elite.
The Hacienda suite can also accommodate more guests, thanks to a sofa bed. In terms of accessibility, I found the resort very mobility-friendly, with elevators in the buildings and four accessible rooms available. Since the property is quite large, the golf carts that run frequently are a huge help in getting from one spot to another.
Resort Dining
Sandos Playacar’s dining scene has plenty of variety, though it’s not exactly a gourmet hotspot. You’ll find everything from buffets and snack bars on the beach to international à la carte restaurants and swim-up bars. During my visits, using the resort app to make dinner reservations was a breeze, but that could change when it’s more crowded. The buffet lineup was always wide enough that I never went hungry.
Gourmex, the Mexican restaurant, really stood out, while Il Piemonte (the Italian option) fell short. It’s important to keep in mind that this is a mid-range all-inclusive, so top-tier dining isn’t its primary focus. If you need a break from the main eateries, there’s a sports bar near the lobby with pool tables, as well as a Cupcake Café in the Adults-Only section.
Entertainment & Nightlife
Entertainment is a strong point here, with live shows, themed performances, and music events that change daily. The Shakira tribute is a crowd favorite and shouldn’t be missed. During the day, the adults-only pool offers foam parties, aquafit classes, and other fun activities that keep the atmosphere lively. If you’re traveling with kids or family members who prefer a quieter setting, there are more low-key events around the main pools and family-friendly areas. Smokers will also appreciate that the resort has designated smoking areas scattered around the property.
Getting Around & Check-In
Sandos Playacar is a large resort, which can be both a blessing and a minor inconvenience, depending on your perspective. I enjoyed having space to roam and explore, but I was also grateful for the golf carts running frequently so I never felt stuck. Check-in can be a bit time-consuming, which isn’t unusual for popular all-inclusive resorts. Although they offer an online check-in option, I’ve never personally used it, so I can’t comment on its effectiveness. Be prepared to wait if you’re arriving during peak check-in hours.
Sandos Playa Car …Great Budget Friendly Choice!
Sandos Playacar delivers a solid all-inclusive experience that merges a beautiful Riviera Maya beachfront with enough amenities and activities to keep guests entertained day and night. It’s a family-friendly resort, yet the adults-only section allows for a quieter, more grown-up vibe if that’s what you’re after. The wedding department is a standout, making it an appealing choice for couples planning a destination celebration that won’t overwhelm their budget.
