Where to Stay in Baltimore Harbor
When we booked our stay in Baltimore Harbor, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. We had tickets to a concert at Rams Head Live! and knew we wanted a hotel that was located close to the venue. With this in mind, we chose the Staybridge Suites Baltimore – Inner Harbor. The price was right, and at just a block away from all the hubbub of the Inner Harbor, the location seemed ideal.
Checking in, we expected to find a standard chain hotel. What we didn’t know was that the hotel is actually located inside the restored 1904 Chamber of Commerce building. Staybridge did an incredible job of maintaining the charm and history of the place, and we loved finding all the small historical details throughout the hotel.
In addition to the hotel’s general charm, we also found it extremely comfortable. This is an extended-stay (and pet-friendly) hotel, so we were greeted with beautiful high ceilings and extremely spacious accommodations (perfect for a family if you’re traveling with kids!). You’ll also find security guards at night (safety first!) and a complimentary breakfast in the morning. The only downside was a bit of street noise at night and the fact that businesses are largely closed in this area on the weekends.
We ultimately enjoyed our stay, but would probably stay elsewhere on a return trip. Why? Well, we discovered that there are several hotels that are located INSIDE the Inner Harbor, like Pier 5 Hotel Baltimore.
We recommend choosing one of these if budget allows – you’ll stay right in the safest and most charming part of the city, where you’ll enjoy nearby dining, shopping, and spectacular harbor views.
Things to Do in Baltimore Harbor
Baltimore’s Inner Harbor may be on the small side, but there’s certainly no lack of things to do. For our girls’ getaway, we started with lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe, which is located inside the historic Pratt Street Power Plant. If Hard Rock isn’t your style, there’s also a Phillips Seafood right next door!
After lunch, we headed over to the harbor, where we rented a motorized Dragon Boat and set off for a relaxing cruise on the water. This cost us approximately $40 for 30 minutes, which proved to be plenty of time for this iconic Baltimore activity.
We spent the rest of the afternoon settling into the hotel room and preparing for our dinner and the concert. Then, after a stroll around the city, we popped into McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood restaurant. We had no reservation but arrived early enough that we had no trouble getting a table.
We especially enjoyed sitting outside on the patio. The vibe was peaceful and intimate with AMAZING harbor views.
Better yet, history buffs (like us!) will love seeing Baltimore’s iconic Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse up close and personal, from the comfort of your own table! Dating back to 1856, this is one of the oldest Chesapeake lighthouses still in existence.
After a light dinner and cocktails, we headed over to Rams Head Live! for the concert. The venue is located at Baltimore’s Power Plant Live!, where we found plenty of opportunities for drinking, dining, and socializing.
Baltimore for Kids & Families
Of course, we were traveling kid-free – but if you’ve got kiddos in tow, live music and bar-hopping are probably NOT on the itinerary. Luckily, there’s still plenty to do for families and kids – starting with the National Aquarium.
Other options include a family-friendly pirate adventure with Urban Pirates or touring the Harbor’s historic ships, including the USS Torsk (1944-1968), the USS Constellation (1854-1955), and the USCG Cutter 37 (1935-1986), which is the last surviving warship from the Battle of Pearl Harbor.
The ships offer a wide variety of fascinating tours and activities (including an overnight experience!), so be sure to purchase your tickets in advance.
Finally, no getaway to Baltimore is complete without a good old-fashioned baseball game! Head over to Oriole Park at Camden Yards for some wholesome family fun and entertainment.
Have a diehard baseball fan in your group? Finish off your trip with a visit to the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum, located just two blocks from Camden Yards. Here, you’ll tour the home and birthplace of Babe Ruth, and learn about the history of the legendary Bambino.
Is Baltimore Inner Harbor Worth Visiting?
Absolutely! While some of the city is still rather depressed, there are lots of fantastic things to do in Baltimore Harbor. Focus on the Inner Harbor area, and be aware of your surroundings (always sound advice no matter where you are!).
How do You Spend a Day in Baltimore Harbor?
If you’re limited to one day in Baltimore Harbor, opt for the highlights. Check out the aquarium, rent a boat in the harbor, tour a historic boat, and enjoy an indulgent dinner – complete with FABULOUS views.
